Eco Eco Azal!

Its Wednesday 30th August, and we've had the Eco Warriors camped half a mile up the road for the last week! The village where I live is virtually on the backdoor step of Drax Power Station, the largest coal burning power station in Europe. It and the other two stations that make up Yorkshire's 'Megawatt Valley' (Eggborough and Ferrybridge) have been targeted by the Camp For Climate Change. These people are trying to promote cleaner energy use and are against the emmission of C02 into the atmosphere. Well, we all want a greener world don't we? But these people are not going to succeed with their camp and their protest. They are apparently intending to enter Drax tonight at midnight and turn off the power for 24 hours. But as the village has also been playing host to half the police force of North Yorkshire for the last week as well, all watching closely, I can't see this happening. These hippy type protests may have worked in the '60's but the world has moved on since then. At the end of the day, this will change nothing. In fact its probably increased global warming over the village with the number of police vans present alone! (By the way, the subject line is a quote from an old Doctor Who story, for those unfamiliar with the series!)

Banked

Well, its almost the end of the Bank Holiday weekend, and what have I done. Well, I had a much needed haircut this afternoon, listened to an audio play and wrote a number of reviews (also for audio plays). All Doctor Who related and they, along with the stories I write, can be found here... http://p097.ezboard.com/btimelord I've also (obviously) been watching Time Team's Big Royal Dig, hoping to pick up tips and ideas! Back to work tomorrow, but only for three days, as I'm taking Friday off. And why not?

Weekend So Far...

Its been a pretty good weekend so far. Still a day to go, as its August Bank Holiday Sunday. The measuring went well yesterday. Got three quarters of the castle surveyed. There is only one side still to do, the North facing wall, which would have been the inner wall of the courtyard when the castle was complete. As this is currently quite overgrown with nettles, its a job for Autumn I think. My team, Leeds United, won today, away to local rivals Sheffield Wednesday. That puts Leeds mid-table, six points behind the leaders. We're on the up! Currently preparing for a week away in Scotland from 2nd September, so its been quite a busy weekend here too. More on Monday.

Measuring Up

As part of my archaeology A2 course in the coming academic year, there is a compulsory project, which has to be archaeology related (but not involve digging anything up). My choice was a standing building survey. This entails visiting a site of archaeological importance, taking photos and measurements of the remains and writing a 3000 - 4000 word report on the site. I have decided to do Wressle Castle, of which only a quarter of the original building remains and it is not open to the general public, as it is on the site of a working farm. Tomorrow is the measuring part of the survey, for which I need the assistance of another member of the class (holding the other end of the tape). If the rain keeps off, a couple of hours should see the main part of the on site work completed. Just need to write the report then!

Hell

Whoever decided we must work for a living? They must have been raving mad! I work in a laboratory (not animal testing, before anybody asks!) preparing samples for analysis. The work is tedious, and at the moment we are in the midst of a merger, so things tend to get hectic and confusing, usually both at the same time! Which means I'm going to be doing more work, with no help, in less space, for the same money. Fantastic!

Me, Me , Me...

Well, I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Mark, I'm a Doctor Who and Star Trek fan, keen amateur writer and A Level archaeology student (mature). I like football (Leeds United supporter), photography and keeping in touch with friends. Oh, and I'm from Yorkshire, so I can't be all bad! Anyway, enough about me, what about you?
